“The Nigella of DIY”

From continually rearranging her bedroom and offering decorating advice to her parents at the age of 5, Julia has always had an interest in Interiors and when the opportunity presented to work in a soft-furnishings shop as a Saturday girl, the interest became a life-long passion.
From architectural planning to dramatic lighting designs, creative cabinetry to delivering stunning interior spaces, working with her design team, Julia excels at producing elegant yet practical homes, restaurants and hotels.

Having worked for various top Interior Design companies, Julia decided to start her own business in 1997 in order to manage her life as a single mum and financial provider more effectively. “I don’t really know how I coped in the early days. It was very stressful and I spent 5 years clinging on by my fingernails!” Sharing a small terraced house with a friend and her two sons in a similar situation, Julia learnt tough lessons in coping with less than ideal living arrangements. “In many ways that time in my life has given me a far greater appreciation of how it feels to be really hard on your luck. My friend Kass and I would often not be able to afford to eat after feeding the 4 children. My daughters, Maddy and Sophie, shared a room 7 feet by 5 feet for several years. I am, therefore, able to empathise with the families we work for on the shows and really appreciate my home and the life I now have. Julia’s enormous energy and determination saw her through and she is now one of the most sought after designers both in the UK and overseas.

Her latest programme, Rebuild our Home, with Nicky Campbell for ITV will be on screen in June 2015. A huge thank you to all the suppliers who came forward to help Julia create a beautiful, cosy home for Mary & Joe Bruce who lost everything but the clothes they were wearing when their house burned to the ground on Christmas Day 2013. Click here for the Suppliers List and for information about the mammoth project.

She has also enjoyed working on The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Live with Gabby, Daybreak, BBC Breakfast, and Tonight with Trevor McDonald.

“Tonight with Trevor was a great experience. It was a very valuable programme setting out to prove that renovating Victorian housing stock is a more effective solution to dealing with degraded housing areas than demolition. I still keep in contact with the people who work tirelessly to save their homes and their communities.”
