Rebuild Our Home

Rebuld title cardArriving in Johnstone, near Glasgow in Spring 2014, I was confronted by a burnt-out shell of a house, reeking of acrid smoke.. the ruins of a former family home.

Mary and Joe Bruce had bought the property as their ‘forever home’ after many years of hard work and had spent time and money making the house into their home and filling it with a lifetime’s memories. On Christmas Day 2013, a fire broke out in the ceiling void due to the overheating of one of the low voltage lights (renowned for their back-heat) and setting fire to insulation placed too close to the light fitting. Within minutes of the family hearing a strange crackling sound from above, the house became filled with smoke and fumes. Thankfully, Mary and Joe, their daughter, son-in-law and three young grandchildren escaped unharmed. But the fire raged in the house. The emergency services extinguished the fire after quite a battle, but little remained. Mary and Joe were devastated. It is hard to imagine how difficult it is to lose not only the security and safety of your own home, but everything you hold dear; photographs, mementoes, gifts from loved ones since passed..

Rebuild - Glasgow Ex Overall

Original layout

I was tasked with working with the supremely efficient contractors, Lambert Contracts, and the insurance company to ensure Mary and Joes insurance money was spent wisely and we achieved the very best possible result for them. After a long chat with Mary and Joe to find out their likes, dislikes, and what they wanted and needed from their home,  I set-to putting together a layout within the original footprint of the house that provided a better solution to their needs. The kitchen, whilst a large space, was dark and had access to the rear garden only through the utility room. A cloakroom cut into the remaining space making the layout awkward.

Rebuild - Glasgow New Overall

New layout

After some head-scratching I designed an alternative that made the very best of the available space whilst providing useful shower-facilities for the guest bedroom. The dining table could be positioned to take maximum benefit from the light from the new patio doors and views to the garden and beyond. A computer desk area for the children to do their homework was incorporated within view of adults using the kitchen. The kitchen area itself, now squared-off, could fit all the gadgets Joe desired and plenty of surface space and seating for family entertaining. A small change in the Living Room, changing the double doors to a single, provided more wall space against which seating could be placed and therefore enough for all the family. Mary specifically hoped for a bay window to allow more light to enter the room which I managed to achieve for her out of the budget.

For the overall design/ feel for the interior, I was determined to create a homely feel, warm and inviting whilst maximising the feeling of space and light.

The sitting room in particular needed to be restful, practical and flexible to be suitable for both quiet moments and when the family visited. I chose a cool palette to open the room and layered textiles to soften. An illuminated, coffered ceiling detail added height and architectural interest where there originally was little. The addition of a chimney and stunning gas fireplace, with built-in furniture either side added the much-needed focal point. The buttoned ottoman is a useful piece to use as a coffee-table, playing games, putting your feet up or additional seating.

The biggest thank you to all our suppliers who pulled together to ensure my budget went as far as possible and gave Joe and Mary their home back again, and a smile on their faces.

Wonderful… thank you xxIMG_8336
